How many people use IM a day?

A lot of people use instant messaging daily since it is available world wide as a form of communication. Our technology now-a-days works brilliantly. People all around the universe can talk on their computers or through their cellular devices with downloaded applications as long as their is Internet Access or free Wi-Fi. About 250 Million people use instant messaging today.

...Is Instant Messaging safe?

It can be safe if you know the person you`re talking to personally, it wouldn`t be safe if you met the person online. It also wouldn`t be safe if someone gets a hold of your conversation and reads it. You can also get a virus from Instant Messaging, and sometimes, these virus are not easy to get rid of. If you reveal your info to others online, they can steal your identity just like that.

Parents, please educate your children while they are still young to not accept any friends request through their BBM, Tango, Viber or any applications if they do not know who they are accepting as a friend. It wouldn`t hurt to repeatedly advise our loved ones to always be safe and take precautions when it comes knowing who you are talking to.

IM History

Before the Internet became popular, a lot of people were already online. The major online services, such as America Online(AOL), Prodigy and CompuServe, were the main way that ordinary people could connect and communicate with each other online. Online services provide the actual interface that you use when you're connected to the service, which creates a targeted experience for users.

In the early 1990s, people began to spend more and more time on the Internet. Creative software developers designed chat-room software and set up chat rooms on Web servers. In a chat room, a group of people can type in messages that are seen by everyone in the "room." Instant messages are basically a chat room for just two people.

Instant messaging really exploded on the Internet scene in November 1996. That's when Mirabilis introduced ICQ, a free instant-messaging utility that anyone could use. ICQ, shorthand for "I seek you", uses a software application, called a client, that resides on your computer. The client communicates with an ICQ server whenever you are online and the client is running.

In 1997, AOL, considered the pioneer of the online community, gave its users the ability to talk in real time with each other through chat rooms and instant messages. In June 1998, AOL acquired Mirabilis and ICQ.

The ICQ model is the basis for most instant-messaging utilities on the market today. In the next section we'll examine how these services work.

The *BAD* Things

Instant Messaging was often used as a substitute for other forms of communications, such as phone calls, emails, face-to-face conversations. Using instant messaging led to more conversations on the computer but conversations are more brief.

One of the most common pitfalls that comes with IM is grammar and spelling errors. It is a more informal platform of communication, so really, no one is expecting perfection. a few errors may not cause concern, but consistently making grammar errors and use of sloppy words, especially in business may cause people to question your credibility.

Furthermore...
- Not formal
- Cannot see the person`s body language or person`s facial expressions
- Potentially get a virus from other`s you are talking to
- Messages can be delayed, sometimes for hours
- Can be addicting and you waste tons of time using it (Unproductive)

The *GOOD* Things

Instant Messaging
is one of the fastest and easiest ways to communicate with Family and Friends all over the world, anytime and anywhere. It is beyond cool and a lot of people are using it. Sometimes, face-to-face meetings and more formal communications are what is needed – but IM can help in these other ways:

  • Connects in a simply and easy way to chat with people worldwide
  • Its very instant and convenient as oppose to emailing where you cannot get an immediate reply
  • IM also prove its worth as an alternative to long distance telephone services for people who need to communicate with clients in real time.
  • Many IM platforms are free to use and there are no minute charges.
  • Instant messaging allows users to control how and when they communicate with others. The technology gives people the ability to flag their availability or to postpone responses before they engage in a more intrusive way of communication.
  • Its fun and easy to start a group discussion. It can be for planning a get together with friends or planning an event for a friend's birthday.
  • Some IM like "WeChat", "Whats App", "Tango", ChatOn", and many more apps have the ability to transfer pictures, voice chat and even files right on the spot.
  • Many popular IM`s requires to have you create your own username and password account.
  • IM is great for users that would like to chat with their Friends and Family as it gives them control over who has access to their details
  • When you get pictures and video messages on your cell phone, you can also transfer them to your laptops or tablets
